Bass Fishing

Bass fishing in particular is a very popular and exhilarating water sport. This is likely due to the fact that Bass can be found in a multitude of places, especially Canada; many American lakes and rivers, including Florida’s famous Lake Okeechobee (Bass Fishing is abundant here) and the Hudson River where striped bass fishing is enjoyed by many; and even in Central America and Mexico (Bass fishing in Puerto Vallarta is another well-known and attractive activity, especial for those who like fishing in exotic places). The Bass fish appears to be among the most prevalent in the western hemisphere, and that’s likely another reason for its ongoing popularity.

The distinction with this type of fishing falls in with the particular bait, lures, hooks and rods used, not to mention the many Bass fishing techniques (see: “Bass Fishing Tips”) that have proven to bring success for those who are committed to the sport. Varying kinds of Bass exist, but it appears that tackle and approaches are basically the same. The eating and behavioral habits of the Bass in general tend to leader anger’s where to go; knowledge of the target fish is crucially important in determining how to fish for them.

Hooks, lures, and baits, for example, conform to the Bass’s appetite and size of oral cavity. The bigger oral cavity requires the bigger hook. One very common size and style and hook for Largemouth Bass fishing is the Mustad flat-eye wide-gap 3/0, 4/0 or 5/0. Since Frogs are a among the favorite delicacy for Bass, sizes 4/0 and 5/o are ideal for small frogs, frog-like bait, spoon lures and large worms. The 3/0, however, is just right for smaller and lighter bait, such as the spinner bait, jigs, handmade fly baits with flaring skirts and anything made of plastic. Smallmouth Bass fishing would naturally take a hook with a tighter bent so that engulfing the hook would be possible.

Ultra light rods with tough lines weighing anywhere from 80 lbs to 130 lbs seems appropriate for Bass fishing, even for use in Bass fishing tournaments where certain standards have to met. As a matter of fact, similar equipment is likely used for Bass fishing in many environments and situations: the warm tropics of Florida Bass fishing, the colder temperatures of Alaska, Canada and Maine Bass fishing, even Peacock fishing can be successfully enjoyed and achieved by using buzz-bait on a lightweight rod with a firm line. But Bass have been known to put up a bit of a fight, so spinning reels are common for rapid slack.
