Types Of Fishing
Different types of fishing are contingent on seasons, locations, bodies of water and target. Because each of these factors is unique, so are the particular fishing techniques and the equipment used in each circumstance.
Fly fishing is probably the simplest and most laidback type because of the serene settings and minimal amount of equipment used. As implied by the name, fly fishing uses flies appended to hooks and a rod, with or without a reel. The version is inherently inexpensive because bait is caught and reserved, although, in some areas, dead flies can be bought in cans or bags for a relatively cheap price. Typically considered a recreation or hobby, fly fishing is usually practiced in small lakes or streams in country or rural areas by those who intend to catch light loads of fish like bass or pike.
Much different is ice fishing, which is common in colder climates, such as in northern Canada, Alaska, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Greenland and arctic regions where snow and ice are integral to the environment. This type of fishing does not necessarily require a boat, although ice sleds are quite frequently employed for fishing on extended parts for frozen bodies of water. A cutting implement, such as a spade, power auger or saw, is used to open a hole in the ice, typically round, square or rectangular in shape. Very light rods bearing colorful lures, waxworms or mousies are used in conjunction with flags that flip up when a catch, or “strike,” happens. Many times, ice fishing is conducted inside a heated ice shack or shanty supplied with necessities, including a cot for sleeping, so that fishing can be enjoyed outside of inclement weather. Northern pike and yellow perch are common targets in ice fishing, especially on the Great Lakes.
Salt water fishing and sea fishing are very similar. In these instances, crews of fisherwomen and fishermen collect on large boats or ships with large nets attached to rigs and spear guns mounted to the decks. Many of these ships feature a rounded platform, encircled by a railing, extending from the prow so spear guns can be aimed and fired easily without interference from the deck. This type of fishing takes place in wide, open water, like oceans, while on environmental or commercial ventures all over the world during month-long tours. Those who engaged in this type of fishing are trained in various fishing techniques and are seasoned in the use many or all forms of fishing equipment. Common targets are octopus, squid, jellyfish, shrimp, eel, whale, shark, swordfish, turtle, and a wide assortment of fish including tuna.
Fishing is very versatile because of the many approaches taken for various reasons, whether it be for food, environmental observance, or merely sport. Whichever type of fishing is favored, it is always enjoyable to beginners and experienced alike.
